Limit to high-spin isomerism in hafnium isotopes

چکیده
Configuration-constrained nuclear shape calculations are used to show that reinforcing neutron and proton orbital structures create exceptional conditions for the formation of multiquasiparticle isomers in neutron-rich hafnium isotopes, with axially symmetric, prolate shapes. Highly excited, long-lived states are predicted. However, at angular momenta close to 40\ , orbital alignment effects for collective oblate rotation lead to a deep potential minimum that competes energetically with the prolate multiquasiparticle states.

Deformation and its influence on the K isomerism in neutron-rich Hf nuclei
We investigate the influence of deformation on the possible occurrence of long-lived K isomers in Hf isotopes around N = 116, using configuration-constrained calculations of potential-energy surfaces. Despite having reduced shape elongation, the multi-quasiparticle states in Hf remain moderately robust against triaxial distortion, supporting the long expected occurrence of exceptionally long-li...
متن کاملStructure and decay of a four-quasiparticle 15(-) isomer in 180Ta.
A four quasiparticle high-K isomer with a meanlife of 45~2! ms has been identified at 1451 keV in Ta, populated in the Yb(B,a3n! Ta reaction. The isomer decays into a rotational band which is associated with the two-quasiparticle 9 isomer at 75.3 keV. Analysis of the branching ratios within that band and the magnetic moment for the 9 isomer, supports the configuration assignment to the 9 isomer...
متن کاملYrast three - quasiparticle K isomers in neutron - rich 181 Hf
Long-lived isomeric states in nuclei are unique laboratories for studying the detailed properties of nuclear wave functions. From an experimental standpoint, transitions deexciting long-lived isomers provide clean information on wave-function admixtures, since a better signal-to-noise ratio is achieved if short-lived excitations are allowed to decay away. From a theoretical perspective, a long-...
متن کاملCoulomb excitation paths of high-K isomer bands in 178Hf.
Three distinctly different mechanisms are shown to populate the K(pi)=6(+) (t(1/2)=77 ns), 16(+) (31 yr), and 8(-) (4 s) isomer bands of 178Hf by Coulomb excitation. High spin states of the three isomer bands were populated by Coulomb excitation of a hafnium target with a 650 MeV 136Xe beam. Although direct population of high-K bands is highly K-forbidden, isomer bands in 178Hf were populated u...
متن کاملHigh-K isomers in neutron-rich zirconium isotopes
The neutron-rich zirconium isotopes are a key testing ground for nuclear models due to their sensitivity to shape changes, and the crossing of the r-process path of explosive nucleosynthesis. Furthermore, recent experimental data have revealed a high-spin isomer in Zr. Here we report the results of configuration-constrained potential-energy-surface calculations of ground states and high-K state...
